The existence of a consistent naming schema makes your job much easier, but by no means does all the work for you. Within each named model there were variations, typically in one or more of four areas: Dial Case Material less common variation Movement least common variation Put that all together, and the result is that some models were available in numerous variations.
So, though the watches may look different at a glance, they are in fact just variations of the same model. Identification of a watch is a process, typically done as follows: First, establish that the watch is, in fact a Hamilton.
Omega serial numbers by year Together with a reference number, the brand Omega placed their serial numbers on the inside of the backcase. One serial number indicates in which year or periode the watch was produced while the other number (the reference number) indicates which model or serie the specific watch belongs to.
The dial is excellent and factory original. The date snaps over perfectly at 12 pm sharp. The top of this Omega signed case is gold filled and the back is stainless steel and a snap in. The case reference number is The hands are original and the crystal will come to you flawless. From lug to lug this Omega signed case is 38mm long and wide less the Omega signed crown it is 33mm.
The movement is fully automatic and it is a double roller balance system and inca bloc shock protected. This is a caliber Omega in house factory movement and there are 24 very clean and inspected jewels. The serial number for this piece is 21, , which tells me it is from the year On a closing note this is not a quick date set.
When you flip the date over at 12, you go back 20 minutes and then forward to 12 and the date will change to the next date. This model is one generation prior to the “quick set date”. This is a signed Omega 14 karat solid gold and it is rose gold. The case from lug to lug is 30mm and across it is 24mm so this is a small size piece.

Clock-watch[ edit ] The earliest dated watch known once belonged to Philip Melanchthon and is now in the Walters Art Museum , Baltimore The first timepieces to be worn, made in the 16th century beginning in the German cities of Nuremberg and Augsburg , were transitional in size between clocks and watches. Nuremberg clockmaker Peter Henlein or Henle or Hele is often credited as the inventor of the watch. He shapes many-wheeled clocks out of small bits of iron, which run and chime the hours without weights for forty hours, whether carried at the breast or in a handbag However, other German clockmakers were creating miniature timepieces during this period, and there is no evidence Henlein was the first.
Omega Centenary. this is one of the very first Omega Centenary watches from the very first series, issued to celebrate the first years of outstanding success for Omega watches. During this period, Omega established themselves as easily the world’s leading Swiss watch company both in .
This is probably the most common question watch collectors have. Sometimes it is easy to answer, and sometimes it is impossible. There have been a lot of watch manufacturing companies that have come and gone over the years. Many have gone out of business, while others destroyed records to save space. Some companies as with the Gruen Watch Company , even lost rocords to fire or other natural disaster.
The companies are not to blame. I am sure they had no idea that their timepieces would someday be collected. There are several ways to get an idea of when your watch was made. I am slowly adding serial number tables to this site. Serial number records are available for many of the old pocket watch companies like AM Waltham, Elgin, South Bend etc. If serical number records are available for your watch, here’s how to use them: You will notice that there are many numbers stamped at various locations inside and outside your watch.
They all mean different things. Write this number down and compare it to the charts on this website.

The Fallacy of the “Maker’s Mark” Before sending an item to be assayed and hallmarked at a British assay office a person must first register their details with the assay office they want to use. The reason for this is pretty obvious – the assay office needs to know who to charge for their services, where to return the items, and who to hold responsible and punish if an item is found to be sub-standard, which in earlier times included sentence to the pillory.
This person is called the “sponsor”, which in this context means the person who takes responsibility for the items submitted. The sponsor does not need to be someone directly involved in making the items that they submit for hallmarking.

After two decades it remains virtually unchanged since its introduction. Very few watches could gain an iconic status in such a short time frame. But what is the path that brought to the ideation and development of the Lange 1? The origins of the Saxon manufacturer date back to , when Ferdinand A. Lange, an extraordinarily talented Dresden watchmaker, established his own company and started creating superior pocket-watches highly coveted among collectors all over the world.
In order to make a successful return, it was essential to present to the world something truly unique and special, a timepiece that could surprise and receive unanimous support from watch experts. The big question was: For the creation of the signature watch of A. Lange and Sohne, they thought to give it a strong and unique identity by adopting an outsize date indication which was inspired to the Five-Minute Clock of the Semper Opera House in Dresden, a revolutionary clock with digital indication dating back to Positioned just above the stage, the Five-Minute Clock was built on request of the King Frederick Augustus II of Saxony in order to allow everyone at the opera house to read clearly the time without disturbing the musical performance by activating minute repetitions.
The ground-breaking design was the work of the Dresden clock maker Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes, genius apprentice-master and mentor to Ferdinand A. Since there was very little space available above the proscenium arch and a round dial would not have provided the required legibility in the large and dark auditorium, the two watchmakers decided to create a structure without precedent, involving two counter-rotating drums showing the hours and the minutes, the latter in intervals of five.
The clock was very successful, and gave Ferdinand A.

History of watches The first timepieces to be worn, made in 16th-century Europe, were transitional in size between clocks and watches. They were heavy drum shaped brass cylinders several inches in diameter, engraved and ornamented. They had only an hour hand. The face was not covered with glass, but usually had a hinged brass cover, often decoratively pierced with grillwork so the time could be read without opening.
The movement was made of iron or steel and held together with tapered pins and wedges, until screws began to be used after Many of the movements included striking or alarm mechanisms. The shape later evolved into a rounded form; these were later called Nuremberg eggs. Nickojad changed the 17th century and men began to wear watches in pockets instead of as pendants the woman’s watch remained a pendant into the 20th century.

Omega The vintage Omega Constellation is the watch that basically started it all for me. The passion for watches that is. A number of relatives of mine had and have an Omega Constellation and it were these timepieces that got me interested in watches in the first place.
Between and early ’s, Omega has delivered most of it’s pocket watch movements with serial numbers engraved on the dial side, which makes it, for the uninitiated hands, hard to access and therefore, hard to date.

The best place to carry your pocket watch is in your vest pocket with the crystal toward your body. Various types of chains may be used, but whatever type of chain or fob you prefer to wear, the main point to consider is that the watch itself is carried in the pocket where the watch will not be knocked every time you move.

Pocket watches are relics from the past for many, and a convenient way of checking time for a few. The cellphone has replaced the pocket watch as a timepiece for most, but horology, the study of time and timepieces, continues to fascinate collectors.
I’ve got a pretty old Omega pocketwatch here that belonged to my great grandfather, and I just wanted to determine roughly how old is it, and if there’s anything notable about this piece. It has quite a few unusual characteristics. It’s a silver hunter-style case, except there are two “lids” my apologies if I’m using the wrong terms: The dial has no Omega logo, just the word Omega. It could be a lacquered dial.
Most hunter-style pocketwatches I’ve seen have the hinge at 6 and the crown at I have a feeling the hands aren’t original, given that they don’t match each other, and aren’t in proportion to the dial and subdial. Flipping the other lid reveals what seems to be some sort of commemorative engraving I don’t speak French.
